Boat Club Crew wins major Offshore Yacht Race
Friday, June12 the 2009 was launch date of the first Long Offshore Ocean Race from Donegal to Scotland and back, organised by Moville Boat Club. The fleet of eight racing yachts set sail
off Greencastle in Donegal on Friday night at 1900 hours. The course was challenging with a number of notorious tidal areas to cross on a route that took the boats out past Portrush through Rathlin Sound, across the North Channel to the Mull of Kintyre and into Sanda Sound off Scotland before turning for home at the Macosh Rocks buoy that was used as a racing turn mark.

A
beat out of Lough Foyle toward Rathlin Sound was a close
run affair with all the boats in
close contention. After
some tactical navigation through the tidal Rathlin Sound
the
fleet converged at the East Lighthouse off Rathlin
Island and turned the corner heading
for Scotland .
Winds
forecast to force four were predicted for the Friday
evening and yachts leaving
Rathlin Sound around midnight
were in the North Channel in SE winds exceeding force
6 in
the gusts significantly more than forecast.With
little moonlight and with minimal visibility
through
the rain and heavy seas, the lead boat ECLIPSE
reached the racing turn mark at
Macosh Rock
at 0300am Saturday morning through some very difficult
sailing conditions.
ECLIPSE a Beneteau
First 31.7 sailed by a local crew from Ballyronan Boat
Club was
first around the mark and heading for home,
less than two minutes later the chasing pack
had also
rounded .The race was on back to Ireland. Tactics came
into play on the way back
with leading boats opting
to sail through Rathlin Sound the remainder of the fleet
missed the
turn of the tide at Rathlin and were forced
to sail up the outside (North) of Rathlin Island.
This
proved to be a crucial decision as the boats forced
up the North side never got back in
touch with the leaders
who had all closed in adjacent to Portstewart on the
final race to
Lough Foyle.During a period of very light
wind on the final dash to the finishing line
in Greencastle. ECLIPSE put in a lot of hard work
gibing the spinnaker eight times to stem the
foul tide
now exiting Lough Foyle all the time match racing MEGAERA
an MG335 from
Moville boat club to the finish.The
lead changed several times with ECLIPSE finally taking
first place, MEGAERA taking a close second. Less than two minutes separated
the boats
after almost nineteen hours and 100+ Nautical
Miles of Ocean Racing in some of the
most difficult
tidal water in the British Isles .

a Coleraine Yacht Club Flag crewed with members of
Ballyronan
